Urgent and emergency health care. The NHS has a number of services that provide immediate access to a range of services when you need help and advice straight away. Take the time now to find out what is available to you, before you really need it. Taking a short time now to find out what is available will ensure you make informed choices when an accident does happen or you are unsure what to do. Immediate telephone health advice and information is available to you 24hours a day 365 days a year. You can call your own surgery, at any time of day or night, and you will be directed to assistance. Just because your surgery is closed does not mean that you cannot talk to a nurse or a GP. In Cambridgeshire we have made arrangements that when your surgery is shut, and you need immediate advice that cannot wait until your surgery opens, you can still get advice and access to an experienced nurse and/or GP. Should you be unsure about what health advice you need telephone NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 and a trained call handler will direct you to an experienced nurse who will be able to answer all your questions and advise you on what service is right for you. You can even look up your symptoms on NHS Direct online (see below) and this service will help you make the right decisions about your next steps. There is more to NHS emergency services than an ambulance and your local accident and emergency department. Use the links from this page to find out what is available to you.
